Day to day

Day 1: Arriving at Filefjell

Transport: Arrival by bus to Filefjellstuene

Your journey begins with a warm welcome at Filefjellstuene, where you check into comfortable single/double/twin rooms. This is your time to relax, unwind, and take in the fresh mountain air.

If arrival with 21:36 bus (schedules might change) an evening meal awaits you.

Day 2: Snowshoeing Hike to Børrenøse Mountain

Activity: First step into the Winter Wilderness – Snowshoeing Hike to Børrenøse Mountain

We kick off the week with a snowshoe hike right from the doorstep of Filefjellstuene. The morning starts with a quick introduction to snowshoeing and equipment use, before we head into the nearby winter landscape to get familiar with the terrain and the group. 

Our goal for the day is Børrenøse (1467 m.a.s.l.), a scenic peak offering a fantastic 360-degree view. From the summit, we enjoy breathtaking views of Tyin Lake and Jotunheimen National Park stretching north, as well as the King’s Road (Kongevegen over Filefjell), an ancient trade and pilgrimage route we will explore over the coming days. 

After descending back to Filefjellstuene, a well-earned three-course dinner awaits you, rounding off the first full day in the mountains.

Day 3: Snowcoach ride with snowshoeing hike and lunch in Jotunheimen

Activity:  Snowcoach ride with snowshoeing hike and lunch in Jotunheimen

Transport: Snowcoach to/from Eidsbugarden

We will spend the whole day in Jotunheimen, on the border to the National Park. The means of transport will be our charming old snow coaches who is the only way of communication to the hamlet of Eidsbugarden. In Norse mythology Jotunheimen means “the land of the Giants”, and it was the natural name to give our most alpine mountain region when adventurers started to explore it in the 19th century. When we arrive at Eidsbugarden we will have a snowshoe hike between the “giants”, followed by a hearty lunch at the Fondsbu cabin, owned by the Norwegian tourist organization. In the afternoon we will take the snow coach back to our base.

From the mountain to the farmlands

Guided hike down the Kings road to Øye Stave church, shuttle back to Filefjellstuene

For today we invite you to join a hike on a royal path: the King’s Road! First infrastructure work by order of the then King of Norway, it was aimed at connecting Eastern and Western Norway, to facilitate connections and commerce. You’re going to hike the original Road, experiencing the snow-coated nature in the valley combined with picturesque villages full of stories and culture.

Day 4: Moonlight & starry skies evening hike with bonfire

Activity: Moonlight & starry skies evening hike with bonfire

A walk in the dark offers a completely different experience – under a starry sky, a full moon, or with luck, the northern lights. It leaves a mark. During the day, you can explore with snowshoes, rent cross-country skis, or join a ski class. Or simply relax and enjoy the view from your room. The panoramic sauna with mountain views is also highly recommended.

Please note: Ski rental, ski class, and sauna are not included in the package price.

18:00 – 22:00 Guided moonlight/starry skies hike with an evening meal at the bonfire

Join us for an evening snowshoeing hike under starry skies and soft moonlight. After the hike, gather around a warm bonfire for a cosy barbecue. A peaceful winter experience combining nature, light, and good company – perfect for making lasting memories in the mountains.

Day 5: The Mountain Pass Snowshoeing Hike

Guided hike over the mountain pass along the historic Old King’s Road on Filefjell. We’ll soon leave the mountain birch forest behind and ascend into the open highlands, where panoramic views stretch across the landscape for most of the day. The journey concludes with a steep descent into Western Norway, offering a dramatic transition from rugged mountains to fjord country.

Day 6: Snowshoeing Hike to Paradisjuvet

The day begins with a scenic shuttle across a mountain pass to the fjord town of Årdal. From there, we hike with a local guide to the dramatic Paradisjuvet gorge. Along the way, stories of fjord life—past and present—bring the stunning landscape to life beneath your feet.

Day 7: Backcountry snowshoe hike

Guided snowshoe hike through untouched backcountry terrain. In good weather, we’ll ascend to a scenic summit, where you can take in breathtaking views of Jotunheimen National Park – the land of the giants.

Located at 900 m.a.s.l., in Jotunheimen Filefjellstuene welcomes trekking lovers and outdoor enthusiasts all year around. The old traditional mountain farm was turned over the years to a cozy hotel lodge with lots of modern amenities.
Filefjellstuene is strategically located close to the the main road E16, along the historic “King’s Road” and at an equal distance (ca. 250 km or 3,5 hours) from both Oslo and Bergen.
It has been renovated in 2024 and can now offer completely new sauna (remember to book it in advance), modern rooms as well as more traditional cottages.
The hosts place strong emphasis on offering excellent meals prepared with local ingredients
It’s the perfect base for outdoor adventures like hiking, skiing, and snowshoeing in breathtaking landscapes.

 

Meals

Filefjellstuene offers an excellent breakfast buffet, where guests can also prepare a packed lunch to take on their day’s adventures. A three-course dinner at Filefjellstuene is an experience, featuring the finest locally sourced ingredients. The menu includes reindeer, pork, beef, lamb, and mountain trout, all sourced from the municipality. In addition, the dishes are complemented by a variety of locally grown vegetables, ensuring fresh and flavorful meals. For those preferring plant-based options, excellent vegetarian dishes are also available, offering a delicious and satisfying alternative.

Transport

Travel green. Enjoy the trip from the big city towards Valdres and Jotunheimen! The express buses take you straight from the capital to the heart of Norway. On the way you will pass mountains, valleys, rivers, and beautiful farms. The buses have power outlets with USB chargers and toilets.

Arrival/Departure

When travelling with us the bus ride from and to Oslo is included in your journey. The buses start at Oslo bus terminal in the city center, next to Oslo Central Train station. The bus ride to the Jotunheimen and Valdres takes approximately 4 to 5 hours depending on where your trip starts/ends.

Departure times from Oslo Bus Terminal vary depending on the season and the days. In general, you can choose from the following departures:

*Note: Depending on the season, your day of arrival and your final destination there might be more or less departures, also there might be departures straight from Oslo Gardermoen airport to Jotunheimen and Valdres. This can affect also the travel back to Oslo. Please share your travel plans with us and we will find the best possible bus departures according to your trip.
