Description

The northern part of Jotunheim National Park is home to the highest summits in Norway, with Galdhøpiggen being THE mountain (2469 m.a.s.l.)! This tour is designed to make high peaks accessible also to those who do not have extensive experience in hike and climbing but are willing to test skills – and boots – on harsher trails than concrete streets.

On the first hiking day you can choose between hiking Kyrkja, or venture your steps on Storbrean (literally “big glacier” in Norwegian) an area equally dear to scientists, ski lovers, and hikers for different reasons…

After this introduction to Norway and its natural beauty, hike through the valley of Visdalen, in the direction of Spitertsulen. Here you will be able to admire the contrasting peaks of three gigantesque summits whilst enjoying delicious local food.

On the next and last hiking day, get ready to rock the hike to Juvashytta, one of the highest mountain lodges (at 1841 m.a.s.l.), close to a summer skiing center –yes, we do ski in summer! And since we’re already so high up in the air, why not reach new heights with a hike to Galdhøpiggen? Will you be three steps above heaven? We cannot guarantee it, but for sure you can attempt touching the sky from there!

A beautiful trip for the average hikers who are sure-footed to hike along the rocky and narrow trails in Jotunheimen, you need to be able to hike up to 15 km a day with a max. of 950 ascent meters to fully enjoy this program.

Concerned about traveling light? Don’t you worry, we have the matter – or better, your luggage – in our hands! We will send them to the lodging of the day, so you’re free to focus on nature and positive vibes!

Since nature provides food for the soul, what about food for the body? Let our hosts take care of it! Accommodations in Jotunheimen are known for their delicious, km 0 food as well as for the cozy atmosphere; eating a typical dinner whilst setting your eyes on an unspoiled panorama doesn’t need to be a luxury for few.

You will stay in the following accommodations:

Leirvassbu:
Leirvassbu stands out for its stunning location in the heart of Jotunheimen National Park, at 1405 m.a.s.l. surrounded by towering mountains, glaciers, and crystal-clear lakes which represents a real Mecca for mountain lovers and those in search of natural environments. Established first in 1873 from Emanuel Mohn – one of the founders of DNT- as a private mountain lodge, the building has been overtaken by the DNT in 2023 and it offers a cozy and comfortable retreat for hikers, skiers, and outdoor enthusiasts, with excellent food and accommodations. Its peculiar position – among 4 valleys and over 50 peaks over 2000 m.a.s.l. – makes Leirvassbu a hub for guided tours and outdoor activities, such as glacier walks and summit hikes, making it a perfect base for exploring the wilderness of Norway. We suggest a visit to Kyrkja, mountain of a peculiar name (in local language “church”) and equal peculiar looks; you will not be deceived!

Spiterstulen:
Former shepherd farm in the Visdalen valley, it’s the biggest private cabin lodge in the Jotunheim area. It was extended for guests in 1836, since the Visdalen path passed by the location and in 1881 a proper tourist statin was built, with several renovations.
It has a strategic position, following one of the oldest roads between Gudbrandsdalen and Valdres, and between the two highest mountains of Norway – Galdhøppig on the west side and Glittertind on the east side. Hikers of all over the world are attracted here to challenge themselves with altitudes over 2000 m.a.s.l. or with daily tours to the glaciers around the cabin.

Juvasshytta:
Juvasshytta, nestled in Jotunheimen, is a mountain lodge near Norway’s highest peak, Galdhøpiggen. Situated at 1,840 meters, it offers views of glaciers and peaks. It’s a hub for outdoor enthusiasts with hiking, mountaineering, and skiing. In summer, visitors hike and enjoy alpine landscapes. In winter, it’s a destination for skiers. The lodge provides comfortable accommodations and meals, serving as a base camp for adventurers.
