Single room supplement in Gjendebu DNT-Lodge – NOK 1.000
During high season, it is almost impossible getting a single room in Gjendebu and usually single travellers need to share room with other travellers when staying there. This is a common thing to do at DNT accommodations. We can still give it a try, if you are not comfortable with the idea of sharing a room.

Extra night in Oslo – Price on request
We recommend you starting your stay with a night in the Norwegian capital for a more relaxing start of your trip in addition to enjoying the vibrant city of Oslo. This gives you more flexibility in case of flight delay or missing suitcase. Let us know if you want us to take care about it.

Important details

To fully enjoy your hiking adventure in the mountains, it’s important to dress appropriately for the weather conditions and local temperatures. For a comfortable and enjoyable experience, we recommend wearing warm, waterproof clothing, sturdy mountain hiking boots that provide ankle support, sunscreen and sunglasses. It is not recommended to wear trail running shoes, everyday shoes or sneakers. You need to be prepared to walk in some snow in case of snowfall. We have also described alternative routes for the steepest parts if the exposure or conditions makes it uncountable. In September, normal temperature is between 0-10 degrees.

Luggage transport

We will send your luggage from cabin to cabin, so you only need to bring a daypack on your hike.

Across the water from the restaurant you will see some old log cabins, one of them is Jo Gjende´s cabin. Jo Gjende (1794 – 27 February 1884) was a Norwegian outdoorsman and freethinker. He is believed to have been the model for Henrik Ibsen´s Peer Gynt. A famous photo of Jo is in the picture book.

Gjendebu DNT-Lodge:
At 990 m.a.s.l. at the west end of Gjende Lake, you will find Gjendebu. Totally remote and only accessible by foot or boat. The DNT accommodation consists of several cabins and a main house with a beautiful dining room serving good local food. This is the oldest DNT-cabin, built in 1871.

Memurubu Mountain Lodge:
Memurubu is a tourist hut at the end or start of the famous Besseggen hiking trail. This is originally an old mountain pasture dating back to 1872, but has had tourists for just as long. Cows are still grazing around the lodge, which lies at the mouth of the river Muru in the valley Memurudalen. In 1880, three young Englishmen went on a hunting and fishing trip and had camp in Memurubu. Two years later, they published a book about their experiences. It was published anonymously in London in 1882, and they called it “Three on Norway. By two of them.”
