A Truly Norwegian Hiking Experience: Fjords, Mountains and Waterfalls
This 7-day hiking trip in Norway takes you in the footsteps of the Kings, from the historical King’s Road to the Sognefjord, also called the king of the fjords. Discover deep fjords, lushing valleys, historical achievements, old mountain farms and waterfalls while you hike surrounded by powerful and impressive nature.
King’s Road (Kongevegen): A Playground for Cultural Explorers
Your Norwegian journey starts by the old King’s Road (Norwegian: Kongevegen) in Husum where you enjoy easy hikes along the old royal road. This was the first road connection by land from east to west. Follow the path of King Sverre and explore the beautiful Vindhella and Borgund stave church before heading to Lærdal.
Enjoy Hiking in Norway with Fjord Views in Lærdalsøyri
Challenge yourself with a typical fjord hike, where it goes straight up and straight down while you are spoiled by stunning views over the fjord that make you (almost) forget the effort. The pretty Lærdalsøyri with its old wooden houses welcomes you back after your hike.
Discover Waterfalls Between High Mountains
You spend the last nights in Årdalstangen, by the end of Sognefjord. Surrounded by an amazing nature, the former industrial town is a perfect starting point to explore the surrounding mountains and Utladalen where you get to experience Vettisfossen – a 275 metres high waterfall, the highest free falling one in Northern Europe. This area is even more impressive in the early summer when snow is melting in the mountains and the waterfalls are powerful, but other seasons have their charm too.
All in all: A hiking trip in Norway – the country of the Vikings – and the fjords accessible to most of the hikers and from May to September.

If you wish to end your trip in Bergen, you can chose to travel the last bit by boat from Flåm to Bergen. This is a perfect way to say goodbye to the fjords and extend your stay in western Norway.
Extra night in Bergen
Norway’s second-largest city, surrounded by mountains and fjords. Well worth seeing.
Extra night in Oslo
If you are interested in exploring more of the capital of Norway you can add one extra night in Oslo, including breakfast.
Accommodation
Husum Hotel, Husum
Active since 1835 as a coaching inn – and later as a local post office complete with telegraph – the hotel presents a Swiss style typical of the Sogn area during the 19th century and it’s a 10-minute walk from the historic King’s Road. It has been visited by Norwegian personalities during the years (Edvard Grieg, Ole Bull and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson), especially because of its position on the river Lærdalselvi, famous for the abundance of salmon. Due to the seasonality of the fishing season, the hotel is open just in summer and can be reached by public transport.
Lindstrøm Hotel, Lærdalsøyri
This charming family-run hotel is located in the historic wooden village of old Lærdalsøyri. Surrounded by colourful 19th-century houses and close to the Sognefjord, it blends traditional architecture with modern comfort. The hotel features several historic buildings, individually styled rooms, and serves homemade food based on local ingredients. Its warm atmosphere and central location make it an ideal base for exploring both Lærdal’s cultural heritage and the surrounding fjord
landscape.
Klingenberg Hotell, Årdalstangen
Opened in 1861 for hikers and climbers passing by in the region for outdoor adventures. At the very end of the Sognefjord, at the border with Jotunheimen National Parc – home of the highest mountain chain of Norway – the hotel offers accommodation right by the fjord. Some of the 49 rooms even have a fjord view.
Meals
All restaurants offer food based on local ingredients. For breakfast there will be buffet. Here you also need to make yourself a packed lunch that you bring to lunch for the day. It is possible to fill a thermos, check with the accommodation. Dinner will be served in the afternoon/evening, when included.

Gjendesheim Turisthytte has a history dating back to 1878. The hut is run by DNT and is located in the heart of the Norwegian mountains, with Besseggen Ridge as a neighbor.
Gjendebu Turisthytte DNT:
At 990 masl at the west end of Gjende Lake, you will find Gjendebu. The DNT cabin offers a traditional and historic atmosphere, with good local food – and is the oldest cabin of DNT, built in 1871.
Memurubu Turisthytte:
Memurubu is a tourist hut at the end or start of the famous Besseggen hiking trail. Memurubu is originally an old mountain pasture dating back to 1872, but has had tourists for just as long. Cows are still grazing around the tourist hut, which lies at the mouth of the river Muru in the valley Memurudalen.
Trails and weather
The conditions in the autumn are wonderful, but it can also give some challenges. You need to be prepared to walk in the snow in case of snowfall. We have also described alternative routes for the steepest parts if the exposure or conditions makes it uncountable. In September, normal temperature is between 0-10 degrees.
All the paths are well-marked. The terrain varies from flat and easy to rocky and hilly. All the hikes as a short steep, exposed crux where you will have to use both legs and arms. Thou these sections can be avoided by walking an alternative route around.
