Cycling on Mjølkevegen “The milky way” in Norway is like a bike ride back in time. Since this is one of the largest remaining farm areas still active, this has become a curiosity today. Experience wild and beautiful views in kind cycling terrain on gravel roads, with cows, goats and sheep grazing freely up the mountain. We have put together different variations of National Cycle Route 5 (self-guided) with full board in traditional accommodation that serves exquisite dishes based on local ingredients. We arrange for luggage transportation.
Cycling Norway and Tour de Dovre
There is hardly a better way to experience Norway’s beautiful mountain landscape than from the bike seat. Tour de Dovre is one of Norway’s most beautiful bike rides, and this round trip extends over about 130 km along the country’s most beautiful parks, valleys and landscapes. If you want to experience Norway on two wheels, the Tour de Dovre is a fantastic choice for you!
Tour de Dovre takes you on a spectacular tour of Dovrefjell, and the road goes through three of Norway’s most famous national parks: Rondane, Dovrefjell and Dovre. The route takes you through calm mountain terrain and idyllic pasture landscape, in addition to giving you fantastic views of Gudbrandsdalen and Grimsdalen, in addition to some of Norway’s most famous mountains.
The route
The cycling adventure starts in Dovre, and you follow the picturesque route around Norway’s beautiful mountains. Tour de Dovre begins between Hjerkinn and Grimsdalshytta, and you cycle along the beautiful river Folla. The trail takes you to Grimsdalen, which is one of Norway’s most beautiful and famous mountain valleys, and you cycle between two of Norway’s most famous national parks – Dovre and Rondane. The stretch is not too challenging, and is generally a pleasant ride. Some places through Grimsdalen are a bit steep, but when you reach the plateau you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of Dovre and Jotunheimen.

You probably have many questions when it comes to our cycling tours along Mjølkevegen, in Jotunheimen or Tour de Dovre. Here we have gathered answers to the most frequently asked questions. If you are wondering about anything else, please, send us an e-mail and we will help you.
How long and demanding are the distances along Mjølkevegen?
The distances and altitude meters between each accommodation vary from day to day. The distances and altitude meters you cycle are greater on the northern part than the southern part. If you want to cycle the Mjølkevegen from north to south, the distances and stages are the same, but then the trip takes 8 days.
If you are looking for shorter trips where the whole family is involved, you should choose the southern part of Mjølkevegen, Mjølkevegen Familietur, or Mjølkevegen Helgetur. Here you also have more opportunities to extend the trips, since there are many more route options. The daily stages here are about 30 km with about 350 meters in height.
If you want to experience more spectacular nature and get closer to Jotunheimen, you should choose the northern part of the Mjølkeruten, where the distance is between 50 and 60 km with up to 1000 meters of altitude per day. This option is therefore suited for advanced cyclists who are physically used to demanding trips.
Is it possible to rent a bike to Mjølkevegen and Tour de Dovre?
Yes, it is possible. You can choose between a regular bike or an electric bike. The mountain bikes are equipped with front dampers that are well adapted to the gravel roads you will be riding on. However, if you wish for more convenience, you can choose an electric bike. When you have arrived at your last accommodation, we will take care of returning of the bikes.
If I rent a bike, what will be included?
With bike rental, a helmet and repair kit, pump and bottle holder will be included. If you rent an electric bike, you will also get everything you need for charging the bike. As an option for the e-bike, you can rent a storage bag on the back.
Which bike do you recommend on Mjølkevegen?
The roads along Mjølkevegen and Tour de Dovre mainly consist of gravel roads with some sections of path and asphalt.
We recommend a so-called hardtail, ie a mountain bike with a front damper. We recommend tires with a little width and good studs.
Electric bike is incredibly nice to ride Mjølkevegen with, then you get enough energy to enjoy the ride, and the nice surroundings around you. Quite a lot of people appreciate the engine, as riding bikes in Norway can be more challenging than many expect it to be.
Gravel bike are also perfect for these roads.
What do I do with my luggage when I'm cycling?
We take care of your luggage between accommodations so you can enjoy the trip with a light backpack. We offer luggage transport between all places.
How do I get to the starting point of Mjølkevegen?
For the Mjølkevegen North Route: Unless you arrive with your own car, a bus will take you either to Lemonsjøen or Beitostølen, depending on your trip itinerary.
The Mjølkevegen South Route starts at Kamben. If you come by bus, you will have a shuttle from Fagernes to Kamben.
Where do I spend the night along Mjølkevegen?
We select the coziest high mountain hotels as accommodation for you on your trip. Here are the local owners who still work in the kitchen, serve good local food and are happy to come to the table to have a chat with you. Comfortable facilities and facilities for cycling guests are another important part of the service. We always reserve rooms with a private bathroom, but it may occur in high season that you have to use a shared bathroom. Therefore, it is advisable to book as early as possible.
Can we take children on the bike rides?
Yes, as long as they can cover the distances mentioned, you can take older children on trips.
Where can I charge my bike during the trip?
All accommodations have arrangements for charging you bike during your stay there.
What do I pack for cycling tours?
You will need a light backpack for day trips, ideally between 20 and 30 liters. A waterproof duffel bag is recommended for the rest of your luggage. Bags will be transported from place to place and may be exposed to rain and other elements during transport.

You’re welcome to bring your own bike if you have one, or you can rent one from us.
All our rental bikes are mountain bikes with front suspension, well-suited for the gravel roads you’ll be cycling on. You can choose between a regular bike and an e-bike. If you plan to cycle the northern part of Mjølkevegen, only e-bikes are available for rent. Helmets and a repair kit are included with the rental. When you reach your final accommodation, we’ll take care of the bike for you.
Bringing your own bike?
You may bring your own bike, subject to available luggage space on the bus. Please include this request when booking.
The roads along Mjølkevegen and Tour de Dovre consist mainly of gravel, with some sections of trail and asphalt. We recommend a hardtail bike, meaning a mountain bike with front suspension. Tires with a bit of width and good grip are ideal. An e-bike is a great choice for Mjølkevegen, giving you extra energy to enjoy the ride and the beautiful surroundings. We also recommend bringing a mini tool kit, tire patch kit, and mini pump so you can quickly get back on the road if needed.
