Description

Embark on an 8-day hiking adventure through Langsua National Park, Norway’s hidden gem and Jotunheimen’s gentler little sibling. Langsua offers flatter, more open terrain, with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain ranges such as Jotunheimen, Dovre, and Rondane. As you hike through this idyllic region, you’ll encounter charming pastures filled with sheep, goats, and cows – it’s Norway’s largest grazing area! The park’s diverse landscapes feature woodlands, muddy swamps, and scenic ridgelines, all offering plenty of beauty without steep climbs.

Distances between cabins range from 10 to 16 km, making this hike perfect for those who prefer to take their time. It’s ideal for intermediate-level hikers and active families who enjoy exploring without the pressure of long, challenging days. Langsua’s welcoming landscape offers the perfect setting for a relaxed hiking holiday in Norway.

We make your journey seamless by helping you reach Langsua via train or bus to Lillehammer, and then to your starting point at Liomseter, where you’ll enjoy a hearty meal and leave any unnecessary luggage behind. Throughout the hike, you’ll stay in cozy, self-serviced cabins, where we’ve pre-booked your beds and ensured plenty of food supplies for your meals.

Day to day

Day 1

Arrival Liomseter

Take the prebooked train to Lillehammer, where you will change to the bus towards Langsua/Liomseter with arrival at around 6pm.

Accommodation: Liomseter

Check in and make yourself comfortable with the beautiful surroundings at Liomseter. Pick up your welcome package and prepare for the upcoming hiking adventure.

Day 2

Activity: Day tour to Nordre Suluhøgda
Duration: 3-4 hours, Distance: 8 kilometers, ↑ 288 meters

Today, you will do a hike from Liomseter to the summit of Nordre Suluhøgda, getting familiar with the Norwegian trails and taking in the diverse beauty of Langsua National Park. The route offers gentle climbs and stunning views of Vågskardfjellet, Djuptjernkampen, and Revsjøene. Enjoy serene landscapes, with a mix of forested trails and open plateaus.

Day 3

Activity: Hike to Haldorbu
Duration: 7 hours, Distance: 15 kilometers, ↑ 460 meters

The hike from Liomseter to Haldorbu is a beautiful journey that takes approximately 6 – 8 hours with breaks. With moderate terrain and gentle climbs, the trail offers stunning views of the surrounding valleys and distant peaks. You’ll pass through serene forests and open pastures, encountering wildlife and peaceful natural landscapes along the trail.

Day 4

Activity: Hike to Skriurusten
Duration: 5 hours, Distance: 11 kilometers, ↑ 475 meters

Today’s hike takes you up to 1,400 meters, the highest crossing in Langsua. If you’re eager for more adventure, you can continue from the pass to the summit of Søre Langsua (an additional 150 meters of ascent, no marked trail). From the pass, a gentle descent leads to Skriurusten cabin, beautifully situated in a birch forest with stunning views—perfect for relaxing and soaking in Norwegian nature and cabin life.

Alternatively, you can opt for a longer route via Marsteinhøgda (+6 km) if you’re feeling energetic.

Day 5

Activity: Hike to Storhøliseter
Duration: 5 hours, Distance: 13 kilometers, ↑ 240 meters

From Skriurusten cabin, you’ll hike just above the treeline heading northeast. The route features only gentle climbs, and in good weather, it’s a dream to take in the views of lush green valleys, large lakes, and the majestic mountains of Jotunheimen and Dovre in the background. Storhøliseter, your destination, is a charming summer farm with a DNT cabin. The farm has a rich history, with the oldest house dating back over 300 years, offering a unique glimpse into Norway’s past.

Day 6

Activity: Hike to Storkvolvbu
Duration: 5 hours, Distance: 13 kilometers, ↑ 500 meters

From Storhøliseter, we head south, retracing part of yesterday’s route before branching off into the mountains. Today’s hike involves a bit more climbing over smaller passes before reaching Storkvolvbua cabin. At Storkvolvbua, you’ll find a refreshing natural pool nearby, perfect for a swim if you’re up for a cool dip after your hike.

Day 7

Activity: Hike to Liomseter
Duration: 6 – 7 hours, Distance: 16 kilometers, ↑ 235 meters

The hike back to Liomseter from Storkvolvbua begins with a gentle ascent into the mountains, offering expansive views over the open terrain. As you descend, the landscape gradually transitions into the lush, wooded valleys surrounding Liomseter, bringing you full circle to where your adventure began. Now, you are ready to enjoy the comfort of a served lodge with a delicious dinner and a hot shower.

Day 8

Departure

In the afternoon, your bus from Liomseter back to Lillehammer leaves in time for departure of your prebooked train to Oslo.

Inspired by DNT

Our Inspired by DNT hikes offer a different experience compared to our standard hiking packages. Please take note of the following details for these tours:

Luggage Transport: We provide luggage transport only from the starting point to the final destination of your hike. There is no daily luggage transport available.
Self-Service Cabin: All cabins, except Liomseter, are self-serviced, meaning you will need to prepare your own meals using the food supplies available in the cabin’s storage.
Bedlinen and Towels: Bedlinen and towels are not included along your hike (only included at Liomseter). You must bring a sleeping bag liner.
Trail Markings: Trail markings may be limited at times, so it is essential to have knowledge of how to use a map and compass and/or GPS/mobile devices.

Add-on

Accommodation Oslo/Lillehammer
We can arrange pre- and post-accommodation for you in Oslo and Lillehammer if you wish. Please get in touch with us for prices.

Travel towards Bergen
We can rebook your Oslo return ticket towards Bergen, if you wish to experience the Fjords of Norway in your travel plans.
If so, you need to add a night in Lillehammer, since the busses from Lillehammer to Bergen are leaving earlier than your arrival in Lillehammer when you come from Liomseter. We can gladly book your night in Lillehammer.

Fjord cruise from Flåm to Bergen (5 hours)
If you choose to travel towards Bergen, you have the option to disembark the bus at Flåm en route to Bergen and join the Fjord cruise to Bergen.

Sleeping bag liner
When staying in the self-serviced cabins, you need to bring a sleeping bag liner (lakenpose). You can choose to prebook and pick up your DNT sleeping bag liner at Liomseter with check-in.

Equipment list

To fully enjoy your hiking adventure in the mountainous areas, it’s important to dress appropriately for the weather conditions and local temperatures. For a comfortable and enjoyable experience, we recommend wearing warm, waterproof clothing, sturdy mountain hiking boots that provide ankle support, and sunscreen and sunglasses. It is not recommended to wear trail runners, everyday shoes, or sneakers. We also recommend bringing hiking poles in this type of terrain.

Luggage transport

At Liomseter, you can safely store the luggage you don’t need on your hike.

You will stay in lodges (full service) and self-serviced cabins run by DNT – the Norwegian Trekking Association.

Liomseter
Liomseter is a welcoming DNT cabin, perfectly situated as a gateway to explore Langsua National Park. Surrounded by lush valleys and gentle hills, it offers excellent access to varied hiking routes, making it an ideal base for both the start and end of your adventure in Langsua.

Haldorbu
Haldorbu is a charming DNT cabin with rich history, originally a shepherd’s hut that was fully renovated in 1993. Also, the DNT built a brand new and modern main cabin in 2023. Set near the treeline with beautiful views of Kvitfeten and Fjelldokkdalen, it remains tied to its roots, as the main cabin is reserved for sheep herders for a short period each autumn. The cabin’s secluded location, nestled in the birch forest, provides a unique and peaceful retreat, blending traditional Norwegian farm life with serene natural beauty—perfect for hikers seeking a rustic experience in Langsua.

Skriurusten
Skriurusten is situated at the edge of the birch forest, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The rustic cabin has a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for unwinding and enjoying Norwegian nature at its finest. Its peaceful location makes it an ideal stop for hikers seeking tranquility in Langsua National Park.

Storhøliseter
Storhøliseter is a traditional summer farm located in a picturesque valley, with the oldest building dating back over 300 years. One of the cabins is operated by DNT and offers a rustic, authentic Norwegian mountain experience. The farm’s rich history and stunning location make it a unique stop for hikers exploring Langsua.

Storkvolvbua
Storkvolvbua is a small, self-service DNT cabin situated in the peaceful surroundings of Langsua National Park. Nestled near a stream with a natural pool (“badekulp”) perfect for a refreshing dip, it offers a serene retreat for hikers. The cabin’s remote location and charming setting make it an ideal spot to unwind and enjoy nature.

Meals

Full-Service Lodge:
The restaurant at Liomseter serves meals made with local ingredients. Breakfast is a buffet where you can also prepare a packed lunch for the day. Thermos refills are available, so check with the accommodation. Dinner is served in the afternoon or evening.

Self-Service Cabins:
You’ll prepare your own meals, with detailed instructions provided upon booking. Each cabin has a stocked food pantry, allowing you to make your own breakfast, lunch, and dinner using a designated amount of the available supplies.

The Trails

The trails in Langsua are typical Norwegian single tracks. Higher up in the mountains, they can become rocky, requiring you to hop between stones. Lower down, the trails are often muddy and wet, as many areas are swampy. Good, waterproof hiking shoes are essential, and hiking poles can be helpful. Since cows and sheep frequent the area, the trails can be worn down and muddy.
