The new night train from Basel (Switzerland) to Malmö (Sweden) via Copenhagen (Danmark) opens for new possibilities for travelling in an eco-friendly way from central Europe to Norway in 2026. This one combined with the direct train from Malmö to Oslo and you get an efficient and comfortable way to travel to Norway with the lowest CO2 emission you can get.
After several trials of travelling by train from Oslo to Switzerland in the past, I can say that I am pretty much looking forward to having this new train connection. Finally, it will be possible to travel between both countries with only one train change making the trip much smoother, cheaper than before and the tickets easier to book. So when I got the news, I had to have a closer look to how it works in practice and here is what I found.
When and where?
The EuroNight will run three times a week from April the 15th to December 2026 and the tickets are already available for sale. Departure from Basel SBB every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 17:35 and arrival the next morning in Malmö at 9:25. Departure from Malmö to Basel SBB every Thursday, Saturday and Monday at 18:57 and arrival the next morning in Basel at 11:30. The train stops in Freiburg, Karlsruhe, Mannheim, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Padborg, Kolding, Odense and Copenhagen.
Comfort on board
Whatever what kind of budget you have, there is something for you on board. You can choose between three comfort categories: seating carriage for the low budgets, the couchette car where you can either share a compartment with other travellers or book a private one, and finally, the sleeping car, where you book your own compartment and can even choose one with your own shower and toilet facilities for a bit more luxury on board.
How to book?
SBB Switzerland and RDC Germany are running this night train. Depending on where you leave, you might be able to book your tickets at your local train station or on the same app that you use for your local public transport tickets. If you leave abroad, like us, you can book your tickets online here or on the SBB Mobile app. At Jotunheimen Travel, we take care of transporting you further from Oslo by public transportation in Norway. Ensuring you a stress-free experience as soon as you arrive in our beautiful country.
Til whom?
Travellers coming from central Europe who wish to reduce their carbon footprint but still enjoy beautiful destinations, like Norway. Are you travelling from a place outside of the train route? Check out the train connections from your closest city to some of the main train stations like for example Basel, Hamburg or Copenhagen. You might find a good train connection. Are you travelling with your dog? This is possible but expect higher costs as you need to book a private couchette compartment for you and your four legs friend. Do you wish travelling with your bike on this train? Sorry to say that, but the EuroNight train does not transport bicycles. You are maybe allowed transporting a bike in a travel case, but this might be possible only in private compartments and should be checked out with the train company as they do not mention anything about this on the website.
CO2 emission comparison
Travelling by train is a way of enjoying a slow and safe travel, but also an efficient way to reduce your CO2 footprint while you keep exploring the world. The graph below shows the CO2 emission per transport and per way between Basel and Oslo. The travel by train is by far the most sustainable one with 80 kg CO2 emission per person. The CO2 emission for a travel by car depends on what kind of car you drive and how many people are travelling together. The more you are in the same car, the better it is. An average sized car running on gasoline will have a 410 kg CO2 emission per car, which is more than a direct flight, if you are alone in your car. A direct flight comes up to 365 kg CO2 emission per person, if you travel in economy class. Via flights or business class will increase this amount.

See you soon on board?
