Langsua Getaway – an Overnighter from Work at Storeskag cabin

The summer season was intense with a lot of happy customers who discovered our beautiful surroundings here in Valdres during summer and autumn. So now it was time for the Jotunheimen Travel team to go out themselves. For having a good season ending, we decided to go to the mountains on a short getaway-trip. The choice fell on an overnighter trip after work to Storeskag, a cozy self-serviced cabin of the Norwegian trekking association DNT, nearby on the edge of Langsua National Park.

At 4 pm we finished work, grabbed our backpacks and some tasty food and took the car to the mountains. After half an hour on the road with autumnal foliage of the trees alongside, we turned the signal to the right and headed for gravel roads that led us straight to the cabin. Above the tree line the views were spectacular, the mountains ahead of us were covered with the first snow in the last glimpses of daylight.

Shortly later we arrived at the cabin, moved in and started the oven to bring some coziness to the Storeskag cabin. To warm up, we made some coffee and decided to have a short walk through the slightly wintery surroundings. Due to the soon disappearing daylight and the ice-cold wind it was just a short walk, but the fresh snow, the crisp air and the spectacular views to Langsua National Park made it worthy anyways.

Back at the cabin, the fire in the oven crackled, warmed us up again and the cozy part of the overnighter began. We prepared a nice dinner and had a relaxed evening chatting and treating ourselves to goodies like chocolate and Smågodt we brought with us.

And to make it even more of a great evening, suddenly lady aurora appeared above the cabin and created a magical atmosphere here in the middle of the Norwegian mountains. When we went to bed we were totally satisfied with this cool evening in good company at this cozy cabin.

The alarm was set for 6.30 am and brought us back to normal life, only one more coffee with a great view here and we went back to our car and back to the office in Fagernes.

This was my first ever overnight stay in a DNT-cabin and it was as good of an experience as it sounds. In these cabins you get the traditional Norwegian cabin-feeling no matter where you are in Norway. I really like that in the self-service cabins you can pick and choose from the food storage so that you do not have to carry all your food. I also like the possibility of running into other mountain-hikers who stay in the cabin, which makes this a unique social arena in the mountain.
