Femundsmarka – Norway’s Wild Hiking Paradise

Get ready for a real backcountry experience when hiking in Femundsmarka, southern Scandinavia’s largest continuous wilderness. Located on the border between Norway and Sweden, this is one of the oldest national parks in Norway and home of the southernmost Samì settlement, where traditions and knowledge of reindeer herding live on.

The trip starts in the old copper mine town of Røros, a UNESCO World Heritage site, before heading to Femunden where your trek begins. The trails take you through Femundsmarka all the way to the Swedish side of the national park. Experience the serenity of wilderness while hiking in reindeer’s kingdom where a diverse and beautiful landscape awaits you. Made of pine forests, white sand beaches, tundra, mountain lakes and alpine terrain, this is a unique mix that only hiking in Femundsmarka can offer to you and this is probably the reason why visitors keep on coming back again and again.

This trip to Femundsmarka is the perfect hike for trekkers looking for a mixed terrain offering stunning views without having to collect many elevation meters. Recommended for hikers in general good shape and able to hike several days in a row.

Day to Day

Day 1 - Arrival in Røros

Transport: Arrival by train to Røros

Enjoy a beautiful train ride to Røros. Have a look out your window, you might be able to spot a moose in the woods somewhere between Elverum and Røros as your train rides through Innlandet, the county counting the biggest moose population in Norway.
In the afternoon, you arrive in the charming small town of Røros. The old copper mine town is one of Europe’s oldest wooden villages and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Enjoy a walk in the old city centre which has been used to several movies and series, like for example the Norwegian Netflix success: “Home for Christmas”. We can recommend an extra night in Røros, if you wish more time to explore or if your train
arrives late on the first day.
