    Tour de Dovre – cycling holiday in Norway
    Experience the best of Tour de Dovre on this condensed version of our popular cycling tour. This 4-day tour includes 3 days of cycling where you cycle along stunning gravel and asphalt roads, offering you breathtaking views over three national parks: Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella, Rondane and Dovre. On the last day, you only have a short stretch from Dombås to Hjerkinn, before travelling back.

    Tour de Dovre offers a unique journey where you’ll encounter friendly farmers, curious cows, and welcoming locals. The route is thoughtfully designed, ensuring an immersive experience with well-marked trails. We take care of transporting your luggage from lodge to lodge, providing you with a lightweighted adventure. When the evening comes, enjoy cozy accommodation featuring delicious local cuisine, making each night a memorable part of your journey. Dovrefjell National Park is also the musk ox kingdom. Don’t miss out on taking part in a musk ox safari before travelling back, to maybe get the chance to observe this massive animal in its natural habitat.

    Day to day

    Day 1: Arrival

    Transport (not included): Arrival on your own at Hjerkinn Fjellstue

    Day 2: Cycling to Grimsdalshytta

    Activity: Cycling Hjerkinn – Grimsdalshytta
    Time: 3-4 hours, Distance: 58 km, ↑ 470 meters

    The route between Hjerkinn and Grimsdalshytta follows first a forest trail to the beautiful Kvitdalen before you reach the road to Folldal. From Folldal you follow Rondane National Tourist Roads towards Grimsdalen. Here you cycle between the two national parks – Dovre National Park on one side and Rondane National Park on the other side, until you reach the accommodation for the night.

    Day 3: Cycling to Dombås

    Activity: Cycling Grimsdalshytta – Trolltun
    Time: 3-5 hours, Distance: 40 km, ↑ 540 meters

    From the heart of Dovre National Park, you follow the gorgeous Grimsdalen further upstream along the river Grimse. The route is relatively flat except for the last climb up to the mountain pass. From there, a steep downhill will bring you into the Gudbrandsdalen that you will follow until you reach Trolltun in Dombås, where you stay for the night.

    Day 4: Cycling and Departure

    Activity: Cycling Trolltun – Hjerkinn Fjellstue 
    Time: 2-3 hours, Distance: 32 km, ↑ 270 meters

    Follow the old mountain road through Dovrefjell. On the right side, you have the fantastic Dovre National Park and on your left side, you have Grytdalen and Snøhetta, the highest mountain in Dovrefjell. There are several lovely places to stop along the way to take pictures and have lunch.

    Transport (not included): once you arrive in Hjerkinn, it is time to say goodbye to the mountains. Departure on your own from Hjerkinn Fjellstue.

    Bike rental
    When you rent a bike from us, you can pick it up at your first accommodation and leave it at the last one. The bikes are equipped with rep kit, bottle holder and flat pedals. Helmet and bike bags can be rented as well.

    We always want to facilitate you to make green choices. You can choose to add train tickets from/to Oslo. The price also includes the transfer from the train station to your accommodation in Hjerkinn and back. It is also possible to choose an other start or ending destination, but be aware this can have an other price.

    Important details

    To fully enjoy your cycling adventure in the mountainous areas, it’s important to dress appropriately for the weather conditions and local temperatures. For a comfortable and enjoyable experience, we recommend wearing warm, waterproof clothing, sturdy shoes for cycling, and bringing sunscreen and sunglasses.

    Luggage Transport

    We will send your luggage from lodge to lodge, so you only need to bring a daypack.

    Accommodation

    At Hjerkinn and Trolltun you will get a private bathroom with a toilet and shower. Grimsdalshytta is part of DNT (The Norwegian Trekking Association). Here you’ll meet a hut atmosphere where there are private rooms with bunk beds and shared bathrooms.

    Hjerkinn Fjellstue:
    Hjerkinn Fjellstue og Fjellridning in Dovrefjell National Park is Norway’s oldest mountain lodge with a long tradition of hosting travellers and well renown in the area. Hjerkinn Fjellstue is an active farm and is famous as well for providing excellent riding courses and tours on Icelandic horses. 

    Grimsdalshytta DNT-Lodge:
    Grimsdalshytta is a charming and scenic mountain lodge of DNT nestled in the heart of spectacular Grimsdalen, a lush valley between Rondane and Dovrefjell national parks. Built originally in 1923 and restored in the 80s, the hut takes the name from the river Grimsa and it’s known for its warm and welcoming atmosphere, rich cultural history and stunning views in the heart of the norwegian wilderness.  

    Trolltun Gjestegård:
    Located north of the centre of Dombås, Trolltun Gjestegård is a charming retreat with typical wooden architecture. Built in 1984 as a sport hotel for elite sportsmen in cross country and biathlon, nowadays hosts guests looking for quiet retreat. The traditional Norwegian architecture and cozy interiors create a warm and inviting atmosphere, making guests feel right at home. 

    Meals

    All restaurants offer food based on local ingredients. For breakfast there will be buffet. Here you also need to make yourself a packed lunch that you bring to lunch for the day. It is possible to fill a thermos. Dinner will be served in the afternoon/evening.

    Route

    Gravel/trail
    Most of the trail follows well-maintained gravel roads, which may have occasional potholes but are generally in good condition. There are also some brief sections on asphalt.

    You will receive an access to our JVB-app before travelling. This one contains GPX-files, itineraries description and detailed information for your trip

    Kilometers: 20-65 kilometres
    Altitude: up to 1000 meters elevation
    Terrain: fine gravel roads or asphalt, can be short sections with a path

    Trips are mainly on good gravel or asphalt roads, but there may be shorter sections where you will have to wheel a bit in rough terrain. If the Easy level suits you with a pedal bike, you can perhaps manage the Medium level with an e-bike.

    Transport

    This tour does not include transport.

    But we are happy to make it easy for you to travel green. Enjoy the journey by train from the capital, Oslo, to Hjerkinn in the heart of the mountains of Dovrefjell. Dovrebanen takes you along lakes, valleys, rivers, and beautiful landscapes before heading to the mountains. When you arrive in Hjerkinn, you’ll be picked up at the train station.

    NB: Please contact us if you wish to travel with your own bike. The space for bikes on trains is limited and needs to be booked in advance, this will cost extra. We will be happy checking it out for you and helping you with this, if you wish to travel by train.
