Our first guided group winter trip on Nordic Backcountry Skiing in Jotunheimen last week was a blast!
Our guide Simon took a group of guests through the stunning and breathtaking landscape of winterly Jotunheimen National Park in Norway. The conditions were challenging, the winter was not too good but after all we found a great route and had a really great time outdoors on our skis going from lodge to lodge. What an experience it is to arrive at a cozy cabin from DNT Oslo after a long and sometimes a little demanding time outdoors – the hospitality, the cozy lodges and also the great food there is truly worth all the efforts!
Tusen takk for hyggelig vertskap til alle hyttene!
Winter is not every year the same
Finding the best routes in any season and dealing with vary conditions for having a great trip is our main goal and as we are touring in our home-turf that we are knowing so well this was a challenge we are always able to manage without problems.

We had to adapt our route a little and started our trip in Gjendesheim. From there the route took us to Glitterheim, Spiterstulen and further to Leirvassbu, Olavsbu and finally Fondsbu. On the last stretch back to Oslo we had the chance to take one of the historical snowcoaches aka beltebil to reach our bus back home. Even when the winter conditions were a little tricky, we found a good route and had enough snow for a good trip.
We received our rental equipment in Gjendesheim and had a first day trying out and getting used to the stuff. During the winter there was a new sauna built in Gjendesheim and so we went there in the evening.
During the next days on skis we were growing as a team, getting to know each other very well and learned how to deal with the vary weather conditions. So for most of the team it was a pretty new experience to find shelter and having a break in stormy headwind conditions.
Changing weather and how to deal with it
The winter in the north has it’s on rhythm and structure, so the whole team was introduced to this and learned a lot. So, in the end it turned out that the changing and demanding conditions were just a thing we learned to get used to. Everyone was doing very well, and we reached the finish line in Fondsbu without bigger issues, accidents and problems. Cheering, laughing and high-five in the end of the last stretch were the best sign for good time we had during the last week.
The feedback after a week of skiing was really positive, the guests were so happy and grateful for having a great trip with us.
“It was a truly special trip due to the weather. But all went well, we had a great time as a team! It was not about skiing, it was about having together a good time outdoors in winter! And for sure, we had a great time on this trip!”
Miles, a well-travelled journalist from UKs skiing magazine IntheSnow, joined this group also and got introduced to Norwegian lodge-to-lodge skiing style on nordic backcountry skis. These trips are not about skiing, they are indeed about having a great time outdoors in great company, dealing with any kind of weather without problems and enjoying traditional Norwegian Friluftsliv in the best possible way!
Takk for turen to the whole team and to all the cool people contributing to such a great trip!
