Mjølkevegen – a cycling adventure

Looking for an epic long week-end in Norway or a short adventure to include some active days by bike into your vacation? This one might be something for you then. We combined together some of the most scenic roads from the Northern Part of the Mjølkevegen, which is one of Norway’s most beautiful cycling routes. From your saddle and from the boat, you enjoy stunning landscapes while surrounded by the wild mountains of Jotunheimen, home of the giants.

The route covers approximately 90 kilometres in total by bike. The distances per day are doable for most of the travellers and you have time to take brakes during the day. The second day by bike has quite a long climb that can be challenging. Depending on how used you are to cycling, you can use an e-bike to make the trip more comfortable.

Day 2

Cycling from Beitostølen to Bygdin
Time: 1-2 hours, Distance: 12 km, ↑ 260 meters

Transport: Boat cruise with M/B Bitihorn from Bygdin to Eidsbugarden (1,5 hours).

Cycling from Eidsbugarden to Tyinkrysset
Time: 2-3 hours, Distance: 24 km, ↑ 120 meters

After reaching Eidsbugarden by boat you follow the gravel road to Tyin along the big Tyin Lake. If you like, you can take a detour into Koldedalen from Tyinholmen crossroad, to come closer to the iconic mountains like Falketinden, Uranostinden and the impressive glaciers along the way. From Tyin you cycle down the paved road to Tyinkrysset, where you’ll find your accommodation, Filefjellstuene.

Day 3

Cycling Tyinkrysset to Beitostølen
Time: 5-8 hours, Distance: 56 km, ↑ 1080 meters

This is probably the toughest stretch on the Mjølkevegen but so rewarding. You start the day by following the main road and the “Kingsroad” down to the lake Vangsmjøse, before cycling along the lake. Then, it is time to climb. This one takes you to the highest point of the tour, Slettefjell. It is not particularly long, but it is quite steep. At the top, you reach 1315 m.a.s.l. and from here, it is only about to enjoy the view and the gentle downhill ride towards Beitostølen.

Transport: Bus from Beitostølen to Oslo.

Meals: Breakfast | Packed Lunch
