A package for the toughest

This 8-days adventure in Jotunheimen National Park has been especially put together for experienced mountain hikers in a very good shape, who want to push themselves. On the more advanced stages, to the glacier of Uranostind and to the top of Østre-Torfinnstind, you get the company of a guide who will show you the way and will provide you with the required equipment. For the rest of the trip, you are on your own in the mountains.

Your trip goes from Bygdin to Fondsbu with some iconic hikes in between. You start with a steep guided hike up to Østre-Torfinnstind (2119 m), one of the highest mountains in the area. A pretty good warm up to what awaits you the next days. You connect your accommodations mainly by foot with a light backpack while we take care of your main luggage to make your hikes even more enjoyable. On the way, experience some of the most beautiful hikes in Jotunheimen National Parc like Svartdalen, Bukkelægret, Besseggen and Veslådalen. Last but not least, on the last day a guided trip to the glacier of Uranostind (2157 m) awaits you.

A one-of-a-kind trip which is high in contrasts from lush valleys and colourful lakes to some of the highest peaks in the area. Are you ready to challenge yourself?

Day to day

Day 1: Oslo - Bygdin

 

Transport: Arrival by bus to Bygdin

Several departure times are available. Share your travel plans with us and we will help you out.

Enjoy the trip from the big city towards Valdres and Jotunheimen. The express busses take you straight and comfortably from the capital to the heart of Norway. The busses have free WiFi, power outlets with USB chargers and toilets.

Day 2: Øystre Torfinnstind

Transport: Start the day with a boat trip on M/B Bitihorn from Bygdin to Torfinnsbu (45 min)

Activity: Guided hike to Øystre Torfinnstind
Duration: 5-6 hours, Distance: 6 km, ↑ 1060 m

Meet your guide on the boat to Torfinnsbu. The guide will bring the necessary equipment you need to use on your climb. The hike to the summit is not especially difficult but partly exposed and you need to be free for fear of heights. The reward is an impressive view over the peaks of Jotunheimen. After the hike, you take the boat back to Bygdin.

Day 3: Bygdin-Gjendebu

 

Transport: Today, you take M/B Bitihorn again from Bygdin to Torfinnsbu (45 min) where your hike starts.

Activity: Hike Svartdalen
Duration: 6-8 hours, Distance: 14 km, ↑ 610 m

Svartdalen is a beautiful valley surrounded by several 2000 meters peaks and glaciers. However, it is not an easy hike since you need to cross some streams, and the trail is quite rocky. A good surefootedness is an advantage. At the end, a steep downhill awaits you. This one can be quite slippery under wet conditions. Take your time to come safe down to the next cabin.

Day 4: Gjendebu-Memurubu

Activity: Hike Bukkelægret
Duration: 6-8 hours, Distance: 10 km, ↑ 760 m

Bukkelægret is an exciting and steep hike with a longer flat section in the middle. The trip takes you along several mountain lakes and on a ridge that offers you a great view over the Gjende Lake. The steep parts can be slippery in wet conditions. At the steepest parts, you can find chains to hold yourself for extra safety.

Day 5: Memurubu-Gjendesheim

Activity: Hike Besseggen
Duration: 7-9 hours, Distance: 13 km, ↑ 1300 m

Besseggen is one of Norway’s most popular hikes. Enjoy fantastic views over the green coloured Gjende Lake, glaciers and high peaks. The Besseggen ridge itself looks steep and impossible to climb but is doable for everybody without fear of heights. This is a long hike and with a lot of ascents meters, but will give you long lasting memories.

Day 6: Gjendesheim-Fondsbu

Transport: Gjende-boat from Gjendesheim to Gjendebu (45 min) where your hike starts.

Activity: Hike Veslådalen
Duration: 5-7 hours, Distance: 16 km, ↑ 516 m

The hike between Gjendebu and Fondsbu in Eidsbugarden goes between lakes Gjende and Bygdin, in the heart of the national parc. From Gjendebu, the trail leads through the beautiful valley of Veslådalen before ending in Eidsbugarden.

Day 7: Glacier hike & Uranostinden

Activity: Guided hike to Uranostind
Duration: 6-8 hours, Distance: 10 km, ↑ 760 m

Uranostind (2,157 m.a.s.l.) is an iconic mountain peak in Jotunheimen National Park that you can see from far away. You will cross a glacier, do some easy climbing and then crawl out on the top ridge to admire the spectacular view from the summit. Your guid will provide you with instructions and the glacier safety equipment.

Day 8: Departure

Transport: Departure by boat from Eidsbugarden to Bygdin and then, further by bus to Oslo.

Your boat leaves from Eidsbugarden at 11.30 and makes it possible reaching the bus connection in Bygdin. Arrival in Oslo in the evening.

Enjoy a last sight from the boat over the mountain peaks while cruising along Bygdinvannet with the historical M/B Bitihorn. The bus takes you through the region of Valdres and back to town. You can choose to end your trip in Bergen if you wish. Please contact us for more information about this alternative.

Transportation

We will send your luggage from cabin to cabin, so you only need to bring a daypack.

Meals

All restaurants offer food based on local ingredients. For breakfast there will be buffet. Here you also need to make yourself a packed lunch that you bring for the day. It is possible to fill a thermos, check with the accommodation. Dinner is served in the afternoon/evening.

Accomodation

Standard at the accommodations is slightly different. At Bygdin and Memururbu you will have private bathroom. At all DNT cabins shared bathrooms (at it is tradition at all DNT cabins (DNT = Norwegian Trekking Association).

Bygdin Høifieldshotel:

This hotel has a long tradition of hosting active mountain people who want to visit Jotunheimen. Even though many rooms were renovated you will get a historical atmosphere. The food is for sure one of the highlights of your stay. Dinner is made from local ingredients and tastes great.

Gjendebu DNT:

At 990 m.a.s.l. at the west end of Gjende Lake, you will find Gjendebu, only accessible by foot or by boat. The DNT accommodation consists of several cabins and a main house with a beautiful dining room serving good local food – This is the oldest cabin of DNT, built in 1871.

Memurubu:

The tourist cabin of Memurubu is located in the heart of Jotunheimen, along Gjende Lake and at the foot of Besseggen. The historical mountain lodge offers good comfort, traditional atmosphere and local food. Only accessible by boat or by foot.

Gjendesheim DNT:

The history of Gjendesheim lodge is dating back to 1878. This one is run by DNT (the Norwegian Trekking Association) and is located in the heart of the Norwegian mountains with the famous Besseggen ridge as a neighbour. Your host, Marius, is a passionate advocate for eco-friendly tourism. Gjendesheim has a strong focus in using locally sourced ingredients from farmers and producers in the region, ensuring an authentic dining experience.

Fondsbu DNT:

This welcoming mountain lodge is located by Lake Bygdin in Jotunheimen. Operated by DNT (the Norwegian Trekking Association), it serves as a popular base for outdoor lovers who wish to explore the surrounding peaks and trails. Your host, Solbjørg, is a charismatic and passionate lodge keeper, well known for her hospitality, storytelling and dedication to creating an inclusive atmosphere at Fondsbu. Here, you might feel yourself quickly like at home

Route

Trails

Our selected daily hikes are well-marked, and you will meet other hikers. The trails are narrow, often rocky and sometimes you need to cross rivers or streams. Therefore, we recommend ankle-height mountain boot.

You will be given a physical hiking map and a tour description, as well as gpx coordinates you can use on your mobile. The lodging staff will keep you informed about the designated hiking routes and provide details on where and when the pick-up will be arranged.

Important details

To fully enjoy your hiking adventure in the mountainous areas, it’s important to dress appropriately for the weather conditions and local temperatures. For a comfortable and enjoyable experience, we recommend wearing warm, waterproof clothing, sturdy mountain hiking boots that provide ankle support, and bringing sunscreen and sunglasses. It is not recommended to wear trail running shoes, everyday shoes, or sneakers.

Previous experience with long days in the mountains and a general good shape is recommended to fully enjoy this trip.

Kilometre: up to 20 kilometres
Ascent: up to 1500 ascent meter
Terrain: Varied trail, where longer sections are hilly and rocky, there will also be features and exposed terrain.

On these trips, we spend a lot of time in demanding terrain, and there are long ascents and descents. The tours are usually around 6-8 hours. These trips can also involve crossing glaciers and rappelling, this requires that the person participating in the trip has some previous experience and is in good physical shape.
