Scenic Hikes – The FjordsShare:
Combine kayaking in the fjords in Årdal with hiking in the mountains in Jotunheimen National Park. This trek offers beginner friendly kayaking and shorter hikes and is perfect for those in average physical shape, who have some hiking experience and who want to get off the beaten track. This four-day adventure takes you across Sognefjorden, a famous Norwegian fjord, where you’ll paddle through mesmerising blue mountain waters with stunning mountains and summits towering over you on all sides. You will travel through the scenic and lush Utladalen valley, a perfect mix of vegetation, rivers and waterfalls not found anywhere else in the rest of the National Park. Hike further into the park to Vettisfossen, Norway’s tallest protected waterfall.
Discover the fairy-tale like and enchanting area of Utladalen, and stay at historical lodges such as the 300-year-old Vetti Gard (farm) and Indre Ofredal, once a vacated old settlement, that thanks to volunteers has been given new life and restored into a unique place to stay.

- Duration: 3 hours
Spend a day in a kayak on this beginner friendly kayaking tour from Øvre Årdal to Indre Ofredalen. We paddle through the most beautiful landscape in the world, and take our time to really take in our surroundings.
We kayak to secluded streams and places along the waterside. The guide will tell you about the history of Årdal. This trip is off the beaten track, and absolutely one to remember.
Hjelle – Vetti Gård
- Difficulty: Easy
- Distance: 4,5 kilometers (point‑to‑point)
- Elevation Gain: 160 meters
- Duration: 1-1,5 hours
Vetti can be reached by foot or by horse-carriage from the nearby Hjelle farm to the south. The scenic route between Hjelle to Vetti Gård is well marked and is more like a well groomed road than the normal trails we are used to in Jotunheimen. Vetti is no longer regularly inhabited, but it is now used as a cafeteria and bed and breakfast for mountain hikers during summer months. During your hike you will be walking next to rivers and surrounded by mountain peaks, and passing several waterfalls. The hike is suitable for all ages and fitness level.
Vetti Gård – Vettisfossen
- Difficulty: Easy
- Distance: 3 kilometers (round-trip)
- Elevation Gain: 150 meters
- Duration: 1-1,5 hours
Continue from Vetti Gård up into the beautiful Utladalen. The green wild nature and the river along the hike creates a superb scenery all the way on to Vettisfossen. With a free fall of 275 metres, Vettisfoss is the highest waterfall in Norway which has not been regulated. The short hike has some short steep parts, but is overall an easy route.
Vetti Gård – Vettisfossen Mountain Peak – Vetti Gård
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Distance: 7 kilometers (round-trip)
- Elevation Gain: 500 meters
- Duration: 2-2,5 hours
Vettisfossen is one of Norway’s tallest waterfalls, and the 284th tallest in the world. Most people hike to the base of the waterfall for a view of Vettisfossen. It’s also possible to hike to the top. The route and climb is longer than to the base. But while you are at Vetti Gård this is a great scenic hike to combine with any tour. On your way to the top you will get a great view of Vetti Gård and the surrounding area. Once you reach the top of the waterfall you will have a great view Utladalen. But be careful of moving too close to the edge, as there is a free fall for almost 300 meters down.
