The King’s Road: Grand Tour (6-days)

The Kings Road is a historic route spanning across 100 km of the stunning Norwegian rural landscape. It’s one of Norway’s most popular hiking tracks for both local explorers and tourists, and if you’re looking for a true adventure on foot, this is the tour for you!

The Kings Road is a Royal Route that carries significant cultural heritage for the Norwegian people, and the very popular hiking route offers plenty of experiences for the whole family to enjoy. This 6-day tour will take you along the historic route that used to be the main road connecting the major cities of Oslo and Bergen across the mountain of Filefjell. This well-known and exciting route is actually one of the best maintained hiking tracks in Norway due to its immense popularity.

The Kings Road is full of history. In fact, viking chiefs and medieval kings used to travel across the Filefjell mountain when they had to make the journey from the East to the West of Norway. These days, the journey is a true adventure just waiting to be experienced by excited hikers from both near and far.

The Kings Road offers a lot of different tracks and paths, so you’ll get to experience everything this beautiful region of Norway has to offer. The hiking adventure will take you through the stunning natural landscape, ranging from tall mountains to beautiful waterfalls to charming inland valleys.

Your adventure will begin in the beautiful valley of Valdres, and finish in the charming old town of Lærdalsøyri by Sognefjorden, which is one of Norway’s most well-known and admired fjords. You’ll travel like a local from Kvamskleive to Øye using the public bus service, before hiking the historic road between Øye and Tyinkrysset. The stretch goes along hilly terrain with gravel or grass underfoot, and as you get closer to Tyinkrysset, the view of the mountains will inspire you to keep going.

From Tyinkrysset, you’ll hike on to Kyrkjestølen before reaching Maristova. Part of the route follows the lovely Otrøvann lake, also known as Støgovatnet, and it’s a beautiful sight to take in as you’re walking along. Making your way toward Maristova, you’ll hike the old mountain pass over Filefjell – the highest point of The Kings Road. Needless to say, the panoramic views from on high are stunning, and this is a great place for taking photos of Jotunheimen as well as the fjords nearby!

Next, you’ll make the trek towards Eggum Gard in Borgund. This stretch of the hike goes along the original King’s Road, and you’ll mainly be walking on grassy trails. The next day, you’ll be hiking the most well-known parts of the King’s Road. You’ll get to experience the stunning views of Vindhellavegen (a very popular spot for photos!), Øygardsvegen and Galdane – and you’ll also be able to visit the famous Borgund Stave Church, which dates back to 1180 and is one of just 28 remaining medieval stave churches in Norway. On your final day, you can take in the sights in Lærdalsøyri, a charming old fishing village.

During your hiking adventure, you’ll get the chance to stay at some hand-picked accommodations that’ll give you great insight into Norwegian culture and heritage. After a long day of sights and activity, you’ll be able to rest your head at Rogn Camping, Tyin Filefjellstuene, Maristova, Eggum Gard and Lærdalsøyri. These locations all have a long history of offering hospitality to travellers, with a lot to offer beyond a bed to sleep in. Agenda day 1:
  • Accommodation: Rogn Camping

Rogn camping is located along the E16 at Begna river. Many people come here to fish, paddle in the river or go hiking in the mountains or in the woods. Rogn camping is a reasonable stay during your holiday. Rogn camping is situated at the beginning of the King's Road across Filefjell.

Agenda day 2:
  • Hiking: The King’s Road: Kvamskleive - Øye - Tyinkrysset
    Difficulty: Challenging
    Time: 5-6 hour(s)
    Distance: 19 kilometers
    Ascent height: 500 meters

Start your hike at Kvamskleive and continue like the locals with public transportation from the end of Kvamskleive to Øye. Or skip the first part to start directly at Øye to avoid any extra transportation.

Kvamskleive was in use from 1808 and replaced an older road on the other side of lake Vangsmjøse. Parts of the road were terribly steep, and travelers called what they saw under the road for «abyss» and «life-threatening».

At the end of Kvamskleive, at Søndrol, you have come down to the highway E16 again and will take public bus to Øye (bus is not included in the package).

From Øye the King's Road goes in hilly terrain and with a few exceptions on grass cover up towards Tyinkrysset. If you want to take a look at the beautiful Øye Stave Church before you start, walk aprox. 1.5 kilometers further along the old E16 towards Øye.

  • Accommodation: Tyin Filefjellstuene

Filefjellstuene is located in amid beautiful surroundings, in the heart of Tyin/Filefjell. It is a lively place both during summer and winter as there a re loads of activities to do here such as ski touring, cross country skiing, alpine skiing, and trekking. Welcome

Agenda day 3:

Large parts of the route follow the beautiful lake Otrøvann. The lake is also known as Støgovatnet, and is located 971 m a.s.l.

Between Kyrkjestølen and Maristova, you will cross the actual Filefjell and reach Kongevegen’s highest point.

The stretch across Murkløpphøgda is an exciting walk of some 10 km, with spectacular views of the Hurrungane peaks.

Here you can see what it meant to build a road according to «the French principle». It was as straight a line as possible, with great emphasis on drainage and foundation work, but without any particular consideration for the character of the terrain.

  • Accommodation: Maristova

Maristuen is located near the E16 between Oslo and Bergen, 810 m.a.s.l. on the mountain Filefjell.

It's 40 kilometer to the Sognefjord and Lærdalsøyri.

Maristuen is a great place for hiking on the King's Road. And a good place for daytrips to the Sognefjord, Jotunheimen, Flåm, Vettisfossen and the glaciers in Jostedalen.

Agenda day 4:
  • Hiking: The King’s Road: Maristova - Borgund - Eggum Gard
    Difficulty: Challenging
    Time: 3-4 hour(s)
    Distance: 14 kilometers

The stretch between Maristova and Borlaug is 7 km long, and has an elevation of 300 metres. Most is on grassy track and is the original Kongevegen.

If you start at Maristova and head west, you will immediately encounter the spectacular wooden bridges – all built according to instructions issued by the Director-General of Roads, J. C. Hammer, in 1794. These were the type of bridges that formed part of Kongevegen when it was completed in the 1790s.
