Mountain Peaks – Kvitskardtinden

With its 2,193 meters above sea level, Kvitskardtinden is Norway’s 59th highest mountain. An impressive cairn is mounted on top of it, which may just be amongst the greatest of cairns in the world of 2000-meter-tops. Even more impressive though, is the view from the top into the majestic Jotunheimen and its mountains and valleys, as well as the many surrounding 2000-meter-peaks, and last but not least over the lush valley of Svartdalen (which is often referred to as Jotunheimen’s most beautiful valley!). The ascent to the majestic summit is also a relatively easy hike, with only a few steep and slightly challenging points just before you reach the summit. This mountaintop trip is therefore suitable for most people, given that they are in good physical shape. You can access the area by catching the M/B Bitihorn ferry from Bygdin (the place), and hopping off at Torfinnsbu

Hike Description

  • Guided Tour
  • Difficulty: Challenging
  • Distance: 7.8 kilometers (Out and back)
  • Elevation Gain: 1,160 meters
  • Duration: 5-7 hours

The summit – which is both an attractive destination in itself, and as a part of the travers across the peaks west of Svartdalen – can be climbed from several different directions. You can get there from Torfinnsbu via Langedalen or Svartdalen, or from Gjendebu via Svartdalen.

From Torfinnsbu via Langedalen, you follow the DNT path to Langedalsåne, before staying on the east side of the river up towards Langedalstjernet. A little below the lake you turn right up into the pool underneath the top, and up into the gorge on the north side. If you stay to the left of the glacier which is located in the west flank underneath the top, it is safe to walk up the path without glacier equipment. The ice has largely melted away, and what is left is the moraine mass, which can be covered by snow. From the gorge, follow the north-west ridge to the top. On the trip up towards the top, there are some areas that require some moderate scrambling, but it is not too challenging.

Whether you go from Gjendebu or Torfinnsbu via Svartdalen, follow the marked DNT path until you are just below the small glacier between Mesmogtinden and Kvitskardstinden. By following the moraine ridge to the right hand side of the stream from the glacier, one gets along smoothly to the edge of the glacier. You then follow the outer left edge of the glacier further upwards, underneath a distinct steep ridge, and then sloping along the north flank to the north-west ridge, which you follow to the very top.
